Long seen as a forgotten war, the Korean War is an important chapter in Canada’s military history. During the war, more than 26,000 Canadians served on land, at sea and in the air. The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when North Korea invaded South Korea. The project is a partnership between Veterans Affairs Canada, the Town of Aurora, the Township of King, the Town of Stouffville, and the Aurora Legion, and will pay tribute to veterans of the Korean War. There is a trio of electric Azimuth pods powered by hydrogen fuel cell generators, as well as diesel-powered back-up generators in case of emergency. There is also a drive-in bay for a submarine and 13.7-metre (45-foot) tender.Īurora Borealis’ engine room is equipped with advanced propulsion systems designed to be kinder to the environment. In the hull side of the lower deck are four fold-out gates for tender storage, with a massive selection of toys available. The aviation club, complete with bars and launch area, is part of the hangar, and in inclement weather, the main gate here can be shut so that guests are still able to access the pool area. Outside is a grand helicopter pad on the aft deck, as well as a swimming pool with retractable glass floor so that up to two helicopters can be safely stored in the hidden hangar. There are 48 private cabins for crewmembers, as well as a dedicated living area.
